Dreams Take Flight ✈️✨”

YOUNG FLORIDA PILOT NATHALIA GADELHA, 20, IDENTIFIED AS CO-PILOT IN LEARJET CRASH THAT KILLED ALL NINE ABOARD

A promising young aviator from Palm Beach County has been identified as the co-pilot of the Learjet 60 that plummeted into a residential area near Greenacres on Sunday afternoon, killing everyone on board.

Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, 20, was serving as co-pilot on the private flight from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas when the aircraft entered a catastrophic high-speed descent and struck the ground near South Military Trail, creating a crater and erupting in flames. Authorities confirmed all nine people aboard perished. No one on the ground was injured, though roughly 600 residents were evacuated from the area.

Gadelha, a West Boca Raton High School graduate who grew up in the county, first drew local attention in October 2023 when she earned her private pilot’s license at age 17—before she even had a driver’s license. In a CBS12 interview at the time she said, “I definitely do brag because people say, ‘Oh, you can’t drive,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, but I can fly.’”

She trained through the Palm Beach County Aviation Academy and American Flyers, with additional instruction from her father, who had taken up flying recreationally. She had logged substantial flight hours, recently worked as a commercial pilot for about nine months, and had posted about flying the same type of Learjet. Her mother, Camila, and stepfather confirmed her role to the New York Post. Speaking to CNN Brasil, her mother described her as “a very good girl, responsible, hardworking,” and noted that as co-pilot she “could not make any decisions.”

Air traffic control recordings captured the final moments. The crew reported moderate turbulence, icing, and precipitation while requesting a higher altitude. Moments later the situation deteriorated rapidly. Voices in the cockpit declared a mayday, stating the aircraft was in an overspeed condition and descending at rates exceeding 20,000 feet per minute. One transmission included the words “We’re going to crash into the ground.” A male voice was reportedly heard reciting part of the Lord’s Prayer amid the chaos. Flight data indicated the jet dropped from cruise altitude in roughly a minute.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called the crash “cataclysmic” and said it “looked like a missile going down.” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described it as a “horrific tragedy.” The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA have launched an investigation into the cause, which remains undetermined. Icing and severe weather conditions were reported in the final communications.

Gadelha, who had Brazilian family roots but was born and raised in Florida, had dreamed of a career as a commercial airline pilot. Friends and family have described her as dedicated and full of promise. Her boyfriend later said she texted him about ten minutes before the crash mentioning turbulence and ice.

The loss of such a young life, alongside the other eight souls aboard, has left the community in mourning. Prayers and thoughts are with her family, loved ones, and all those affected by this sudden and devastating accident. The investigation continues.
